Eleven persons were slain by suspected Fulani herdsmen in the Igama Edumoga hamlet of Benue State’s Okpokwu Local Government Area.
According to reports, the attackers who entered the hamlet early on Sunday, June 12, torched all of the buildings.
According to the locals, all of those killed were teenagers, as the attackers left the children and women unharmed.
“Fulani herdsmen invaded the community in a commando-style attack between 4 and 6 a.m. this morning (Sunday). They slaughtered some of the village’s teenagers while sparing the old, children, and women by allowing them to flee “a local explained.
Mrs Amina Audu, the chairman of the local government, confirmed the incident and claimed nine bodies had been found so far from the scene.
Three corpses had been carried to Okpoga, the local government headquarters, she explained, and six more corpses were on their way.
Mrs Audu added, “I have a report that the Fulani herders stormed Igama community between 4:00 am and 6:00 am today.”
“As I speak with you, three corpses have been brought from the community to the Okpoga police station, and individuals from the area have just told me that they are on their way with another six corpses to be transferred to the mortuary.
“Women, children, and the old were alleged to have been abandoned by the attackers, who instead assaulted and slaughtered local youngsters. They also set fire to all of the homes in the neighborhood “she continued.
SP Catherine Anene, a spokesperson for the State Police Command, confirmed the attack to newsmen in Makurdi.
“The event has been confirmed,” the PPRO said, “but the command has yet to receive details from police who responded to the scene.”
