On Friday, a 29-year-old father-of-one identified only as Gift was allegedly shot dead by an unidentified police officer belonging to the Delta State Police Command in Obinomba, Ukwani Local Government Area of the state.
The man was enjoying his birthday with a few pals at a hotel in Obinomba Delta State when the event occurred, according to eyewitnesses who talked to NG Times
“The young man was spending his birthday at a hotel along Obinomba and the Police stormed the hotel for reasons best known to them,” one of them, identified only as Chidi, claimed. During the raid, the host and the police got into a heated dispute. They pleaded with the young man not to ruin his party. As he was about to walk out the door, he was shot by the policeman he initially had an argument with.
The young man collapsed and passed out. He was transferred to a private hospital in Obiaruku by the police, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.”
According to another eyewitness who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the deceased was the father of a four-month-old baby.
On Friday, youngsters in the community staged a demonstration, and police officers set up a barrier on the Sapele-Agbor Expressway.
“He was a young father with a baby who had been sleeping for four months. We protested until after midnight yesterday night, when the council chairman arrived and brought order to the situation.
He also paid a visit to the victim’s family. The police, on the other hand, refused to heed the council chairman’s plea to open the road. This was merely done this morning. This is a type of behavior that the cops enjoy.
“The officer who perpetrated the crime must be fired. ‘We want justice,’ stated the eyewitness.
When contacted, state Police spokesperson DSP Bright Edafe stated the officers acted in self-defense because they were about to be robbed of their rifles by local teenagers.
He went on to say that he was only aware of a cult conflict in the region, not a birthday celebration.
“It was done in self-defense, and I will clarify what I mean by that,” Edafe said.
“At about 9 p.m. on Friday, the Divisional Police Officer of Obiaruku Division received information that a cult clash had occurred in Obinomba village, Ukwani LGA of Delta state, and that boys from a rival cult group had shot and killed a man.
“They (the cops) arrived and found the man in a pool of blood, carrying him away in their vehicle. They passed by a group of around 50 boys gathering outside the hospital on their way to the hospital.
One of the inspectors alighted and asked them what the problem was. The boys, in their usual manner, accosted the Police Inspector who was bearing an AK-47 rifle and they gagged him, trying to dispossess him of his arms.
“The men who were with him fired and one of the bullets got to a young man in his laps and others fled.
“The Police took both the man who was shot during a cult clash and the injured man to a hospital, but unfortunately, both of them were confirmed dead by the doctors on duty.”
