Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the manager of Manchester United, has stated that he would pair Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani against opponents that play deep.
This is the first season that the seasoned duo hasn’t played together. Due to a lack of fitness, Cavani has been unavailable for selection in recent weeks.
He is now fully fit and will be included in the team for Saturday’s match against Aston Villa.
However, Solskjaer has stated that the two would be used together for the 2021/2022 season.
“It’s thrilling to see those two working together. I’m confident that it will be a fruitful collaboration. We see teams drop deep against us, not allowing space in behind, and there are two boys you’d like to see in that situation, and I can see those two working well together,” Solskjaer said to reporters.
However, if both players are to play together, Ronaldo will almost certainly be deployed out wide.
While neither player will be happy to be shifted further away from the goal, it appears that Ronaldo is better suited to wide areas than Cavani.
Although we doubt Solskjaer will push him to run up and down the pitch as Marcus Rashford does when he plays on the left, the Portuguese attacker is still capable of playing left side.
