The Nigeria Police Force’s Lagos State Command has been chastised for failing to discipline an errant police officer who is also a DPO, according to NG Times.
The imprisonment of a woman, Jennifer Madueke, over a missing service gun belonging to Denton Divisional Police Officer, CSP Adegoke Akinlade, has brought the leadership under fire.
Madueke was held for days at the Denton Police Station in Ebute Meta, where he was allegedly tortured into confessing, before being transferred to the Yaba Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department.
The 29-year-old and Akinlade dated for a long time before the cop was transferred out of Lagos in 2014.
The couple reconciled, resumed communication, and continued their passionate affair when the married DPO returned to the state this year.
Akinlade allegedly brought the lady to his workplace on Friday, August 27, slept with her till Saturday morning, and dropped her off at the bus stop at 5 a.m.
He invited Madueke for an outing on Saturday, September 4, but when she arrived, Akinlade held her and accused her of stealing his firearm.
She was allegedly tortured by officers on the orders of the irritated DPO, who also requested a confessional statement. She was held in a jail till Monday.
Instead of suspending Akinlade to allow for a thorough investigation, Lagos Commissioner of Police Hakeem Odumosu has reassigned him.
Adekunle Ajisebutu, the command’s Public Relations Officer, said over the weekend that Odumosu will secure justice in the case.
Appropriate actions will be taken against any one found culpable at the conclusion of the ongoing investigation such that at the end, justice would have been served.
“The Commissioner of Police has directed immediate redeployment of the officer in the eye of the storm so as to pave the way for diligent and unbiased investigation”, the spokesman added.
Officers and men may interpret Odumosu’s actions as an encouragement of irresponsibility, according to a source close to the leadership.
Allowing Akinlade to keep on as if what happened was nothing out of the ordinary has given the wrong message to workers, according to him.
They now probably think having sex in the office is not a big deal; that they would not be severely punished if caught.
“Even though security agencies observe esprit de corps regarding issues affecting uniformed men, this must not be swept under the carpet.
“When Abba Kyari, a Deputy Commissioner, was to be probed after his FBI indictment over alleged links with Hushpuppi, the Police headquarters and service commission suspended him.
“Why would you allow a DPO who lost his pistol after sex in the office to go to work. To do what? This matter is already in the news. Why redeployment instead of suspension ?”, the source quipped
NG Times learned on Sunday that Force Headquarters is monitoring events and may take action.
