The forthcoming gubernatorial election in Anambra State is no more news to those who have taken keen interest in following the political fireworks that have pervaded the ongoing tussle for the soul of the state.
The Independent Electoral Commission, INEC has now released the final candidate list for the Anambra election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC stated on Thursday that the final list of candidates for the November 6 governorship election in Anambra State would be released on October 7.
The commission, however, replaced Michael Umeoji as governorship candidate for the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA with Chukwuma Soludo in a list released on Thursday.
The Peoples Democratic Party remains on the list of unqualified candidates for the election.
This was the outcome of a meeting in which a number of matters were discussed, including the nomination of candidates for the.
Festus Okoye, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman (Information and Voter Education Committee), stated this in an Abuja statement.
“The panel met today (Thursday, August 19 202) and deliberated on a number of matters, including the nomination of candidates for the Anambra Governorship election, which will take place on November 6, 2021,” he stated.
“In accordance with Section 35 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as a result of the withdrawal/substitution of candidates), the commission authorized a timetable and program of activities on January 18, 2021.
“Accordingly, by the deadline of July 30 2021 fixed by the commission, seven (7) governorship and eleven (11) deputy governorship candidates were substituted by eleven (11) out of the eighteen (18) political parties.
“The commission was also served with a decision by the Court of Appeal (Kano Division) overturning the High Court of Jigawa State’s decision on APGA leadership and the nomination of its candidates for the Anambra Governorship election.
“This Press Release includes a list of alternative candidates. The document is also available on the commission’s website.
“However, as stated in the calendar and plan of operations for the election, the final list of candidates will be revealed on October 7th, 2021.”
