Rio Ferdinand, a Manchester United defender, has stated that Edinson Cavani has given Cristiano Ronaldo the number 7 shirt.
After alerting Juventus of his desire to leave the club, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner returned to Old Trafford on Friday.
United formally announced Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford, 12 years after he left for Real Madrid in a then-record transfer.
Ronaldo is known as CR7, and he has worn the No. 7 shirt at both Old Trafford and Real Madrid.
Veteran forward Cavani, on the other hand, is wearing the shirt.
Now, Ferdinand, who was one of the Man United zealots who tried to persuade Ronaldo to reject City, has praised Cavani for giving up the coveted jersey.
However, he said that because the shirt has been registered for Cavani, Ronaldo may not be able to wear it due to Premier League restrictions.
“It’s amazing to imagine Cavani might be Ronaldo’s back-up,” Ferdinand stated on his FIVE YouTube show.
“I have to say, Cavani, what a dude! When he realized who was coming to town, he gave up his No. 7 shirt.
After an extensive sabbatical in South America during pre-season, the Uruguayan is yet to make an appearance for United this season, but after returning to Carrington recently, he could be in the squad to face Wolves on Sunday.
But, in the long run, Ronaldo looks likely to take his position, with United agreeing to a cost of €15 million plus a further €8 million in add-ons to buy the 36-year-old from Juventus.
