DCP Abba Kyari, the Head of the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT), has been recommended for immediate suspension from the Nigeria Police Force by Inspector-General of Police Usman Alkali Baba, psc (+), NPM, fdc, pending the result of an ongoing internal inquiry into him.
In a letter to the Police Service Commission dated July 31, 2021, the IGP stated that the recommendation for the officer’s suspension is consistent with the Force’s internal disciplinary procedures.
The IGP further stated that the suspension is meant to create a conducive atmosphere for the NPF Special Inquiry Panel to conduct its independent investigation into the serious accusations leveled against DCP Abba Kyari. The suspension is without prejudice to the officer’s constitutional presumption of innocence.
DIG Joseph Egbunike, the Deputy Inspector General of Police in-charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department, leads the Special Investigation Panel (SIP), which consists of four (4) Senior Police Officers (FCID). The SIP will, among other things, conduct a thorough investigation into all of the accusations leveled by the US government against DCP Abba Kyari, as documented in pertinent papers provided to the NPF by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
The SIP will also seek comprehensive representation of DCP Abba Kyari in response to the charges leveled against him, conduct additional investigations as needed, and make recommendations to the Force Leadership on how to proceed.
Meanwhile, the IGP has reiterated the force’s adherence to the rule of law, assuring the public of the probe’s sanctity as well as complete respect for the officer’s rights and privileges during the inquiry.
