The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State has condemned the conduct of the state local government elections in the 57 local government areas and local council development areas, threatening to take the election to the election tribunal to challenge the results in areas where there were reports of electoral malpractices.
Hon. In an interview with the Daily Independent, Gani Taofik, the party’s state publicity secretary, stated that the report they received from their candidates and agents at various polling units during the election revealed that there were many areas where there were many biases and serious electoral malpractices.
Taofik said: “Lots of support were given to the All Progressives Congress (APC) voters. Some of the APC members voted with drivers’ licenses, National Identification Number (NIN), some of them got multiple ballot papers to use in voting.
“What we have done in those areas where we have proven allegations was to encourage our members who experienced these infractions to prepare to go to the election tribunal to challenge the results in those areas.”
The PDP chieftain added, “We want to state that in an election that was supposed to be a grassroots election, where people should be sensitised and encouraged to participate, unfortunately experienced low voters turn out. There was so much voter apathy and the ruling party used that opportunity to go for the kill in the sense that there was no reason for violence to have taken place on that day since a lot of people were already discouraged.”
