The United of America mission in Nigeria has issued a statement following a Twitter ban issue by the Buhari-led administration a few days ago.
The US mission statement issued with the hashtag #Keepiton came following the indefinite ban placed on Twitter by the Nigerian government.
Recall the ban came a few hours after Twitter delete president Muhammadu Buhari’s tweet on the ground that it violates its policy. However, the Nigerian government has denied that Twitter ban is to curb hate speech by some Nigerians.
The statement from the US Mission in Nigeria read in part;
“Nigeria’s constitution provides for freedom of expression. The Government’s recent #Twitterban undermines Nigerians’ ability to exercise this fundamental freedom and sends a poor message to its citizens, investors and businesses.
Banning social media and curbing every citizen’s ability to seek, receive, and impart information undermines fundamental freedoms. As President Biden has stated, our need for individual expression, open public conversation, and accountability has never been greater. The path to a more secure Nigeria lies in more, not less communication, alongside concerted efforts toward unity, peace, and prosperity.
The US Mission has clearly stand on the side of the citizens. They have chosen to pick the citizens rights over silence. The untowards action of the federal government of Nigeria is to silence the citizens.
However, the Buhari-led government is yet to respond to this statement from the US mission.
