It was initially making the rounds that the National Examination Council (NECO) registrar, Professor Godswill Obioma, was murdered by gunmen in his home in Minna, the state capital.
That appears to be a rumour after all as the police have come out to debunk it. The Minna police command in a statement on Tuesday by its Public Relations Officer, PPPRO Mr. Wasiu Abiodun, said the story is totally false, untrue and a pure element of fake news.
The statement read, “it is important to state categorically that on 31st May, 2021, the Registrar/CEO, National Examinations Council (NECO), Prof. Godswill Obioma, was rushed to National Hospital, Abuja, by his family members where he was later confirmed dead after a brief illness.”
The statement added that the family of the deceased has also confirmed the incident and formally notified the management and staff of NECO of the demise of the Registrar.
However, some Nigerians on Twitter have gone on to express their views about the incident.
Ayemojubar tweeted: NECO debunks rumour of assassination, says NECO Registrar died of heart failure in Minna. I smell a cover-up there.
Global Update tweeted: Interestingly, nobody is blaming Fulanis or Fulani Groups over the murder of NECO Registrar Obioma. And they are not talking about it, and they have not issued a press release to also name the killers as they hurriedly did in the case of Gulak without any investigation.
Nefertiti tweeted also: NECO Registrar Godswill Obioma was strangled to death. There’s been a ongoing rift between him & high-ups at NECO. Imo & Niger States are APC states.
We should allow the authorities to unravel the mysteries; Ahmed Gulak’s assassination in Owerri, & Obioma’s strangulation in Minna.
Popular blogger and social commentator, J.J. Omojuwa tweeted: What’s the intention of those who were claiming that the late NECO registrar was strangled/assassinated? What’s the agenda behind that fake news seeing the family and NECO have said he died due to natural causes? There are no real winners in a war, make everyone get sense!
The death of the former NECO registrar seems to be shrouded in mysteries. Only time shall tell the actual cause of his death.
